This project was a follow on from the previous project (What Type of Creative). I spoke to my friend about continuing to work with her and she liked the idea of doing this, as she likes my art style and how I interpret the characters. This time, instead of working on two characters, I focused on one which was a changling named Gain. A changling is a creature that has not imprinted on a child so can shape shift to their hearts content, and although Gain is technically hundreds of years old, they have not imprinted on a child they cannot take their form and as such struggles to retain memories so still sees themselves as a child.
I believe the two very different drawings will catch peoples’ eyes, however unless you look at the finer details you will not see them as the same character. The left image is Gain’s original form, and the right image is one of their attempts at transformation as they haven't got full grasp of their power, my theory is because they cannot retain memories they forgot how to use their powers.

This project helped me learn a new skill, as I decided to use a different software and instead of working on a graphics pad I switched to an iPad. My skills have improved drastically over the past two projects as not only have I improved proportions and certain aspects of characters I used to avoid, I have also gotten better at problem solving and finding alternatives. I think I would've finished this project a lot quicker had I worked on PhotoShop as I'm used to it, however I'm glad I changed software for this as now I can pick and choose what I do for my FMP and incorporate different skills.

I think if I had to go back and change something about my work, I would probably experiment with ProCreate more in the beginning, but I got very excited and wanted to dive in head first. I think I will take a bit more time perfecting my pieces for the FMP like I did with the left drawing of Gain.

For this character I decided to use very different colours to the ones used in Bris and Ulric as they are very simple, and I thought Gains character was very bubbly and bright. Gains clothing is also inspired by his mothers, (characters who I will be drawing in the FMP). One of their mothers, Lynne, wears lots of colours associated with her heritage so I wanted to incorporate that with a bright colour palette with purples and oranges. Their other mother, Yaz, is a business woman, so I dressed Gain in a smart shirt and waistcoat, however I didn’t want to make them look too smart, so I drew their shirt untucked, to give them a more messy and casual feel.

For my next project, I plan to incorporate all my skills. I will be designing characters and drawing them digitally on ProCreate, but I also plan to do background design with paint and then possibly putting them onto photoshop as I know how to get the look I want on digital but like the idea of planning it out physically first.
